Simple Ways to Find Public Records
If you have found yourself looking for an old roommate or you want to build a family tree for future generations, then you will need to know how to find public records. The Internet has helped to simply the search for old and new public records, but that doesn’t mean that every piece of information that you are looking for will be online, and you may need to order some information from the state that you are looking for the person in.
Check Online
There are many different online resources to find public records online, including state websites and specialized genealogy websites that can help you find the people that you are looking for. One of the main things that you will want to look for when you want to use an online service is to find a site that has been around for a while, without having tons of complaints from dissatisfied customers.
For most online records, you will have to pay a fee, especially if you are looking for birth or death certificates, or you are looking for someone with an unlisted telephone number. If you are lucky enough to know the person’s name and the general area that they live in, then you may be able to find their current whereabouts using an online service more easily.
State Government Websites
State government websites can provide you with birth certificates and death certificates, but you will have to download the forms that you need and then mail the request in from home. Since these records are somewhat sensitive, your request may be denied by the state that you live in, but most of the time, as long as you have a valid reason, then you will be able to get the forms that you need easily.
You will need to pay a fee to have the certificates sent to you. The fee will vary depending on the state that you live in and the type of record that you are looking for. Most of the time, any record that you request will be less than twenty to twenty five dollars, including birth certificates.
Free Phone Searches
Free phone searches may be one of the easiest ways to find public records, but only if you have all of the information that you need. Occasionally, you may be able to find someone you are looking for by entering their old phone number, name or birth date into the search engine on a people finding website, while at other times you may need to know the area that they live in presently.
You may want to watch out for websites that seem to give you all of the information that you need, plus more, but want a payment for their services on a case by case basis. A good website will have an inexpensive monthly plan, so that you can use the service whenever you want to. This is a good option if you want to make a family tree, since you will need to look up many records.
